Death Café and ‘After Life’ Exhibition at Hollytrees Museum this June

Posted on May 11th, 2017

We are pleased to announce our next Death Café in Colchester, which will be at Hollytrees Museum on Saturday 24th June.

On the day, Hollytrees Museum and Freedom Funerals will host a day at the museum of reflection and discussion about death and making the most of life.

It will run alongside the museum’s ‘After Life’ exhibition, which opened this week as part of Dying Matters Awareness Week, and endeavours to shed a light on the subject of death and the period following it, both for the deceased and for those who feel their loss.

The exhibition will showcase evocative objects for the Colchester Museum’s collection, including several items from Roman graves, Victorian memorial jewellery and a selection of objects placed at the war memorial after Princess Diana’s untimely death.

The latest meeting of Colchester’s Death Café movement will be coordinated by Lee and offer visitors the chance to join in an informal discussion around dying and death over a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

Emma Reeve, Collections and Learning Curator at Hollytrees Museum, said “Death is a universal human experience which transcends time, culture and place. It can be an intensely personal experience but also bring communities together in shared grief and ritual.
We hope Dying Matters Awareness Week, the exhibition and the Death Café will give people a space to learn about and reflect on a challenging subject.”

Lee Jaschok, Director of Freedom Funerals, said: “Everyone should have the freedom to choose and choice is as important in death as it is in life. This exhibition will allow people to see how important our ancestors considered death and celebrating our loved ones.
We hope that this alongside the sharing of stories and listening to others in our Death Cafe can inspire conversation and thoughts that will change your outlook on life and death.”
